Resistance & Revolt

From the holdings of the Deutsche Kinemathek: "Insurgent" Cinema

Actually, human upbringing favours discipline and obedience: the idea is to behave decently, not to attract undue attention, not to step out of line. But who does not know the outrageous feeling of impotently suffering an injustice? In all eras, world society suffered from global injustice, which led to resistance and rebellion. This gave rise to fundamental questions: Does counter-violence change anything about the violence suffered? The French philosopher Geoffroy de Lagasnerie emphasises the need to be truthful. "For those who remain silent, look the other way, march along, yes, are complicit. But how does one learn to resist?" People have always taken to the streets in protest, and still do. Sometimes there were political and cultural uprisings that shook a society to its foundations, but led to far-reaching changes in the face of social numbness, authority or rigid morality. Often, plays and documentaries became ciphers for emancipation, resistance and rebellion. Our collection brings together examples of this from the holdings of the Deutsche Kinemathek in Berlin: seismographic mood and inventory recordings from different decades of the 20th century.
