Will Tremper: Pioneer of the German Auteur Film

A critical Look at the German "Wirtschaftswunderwelt"

Will Tremper (1928-1998) became famous through his scripts for the movies "Die Halbstarken" (1956) and "Endstation Liebe" (1958), both with Horst Buchholz in the leading role. Here as well as in his few directorial works he looked at the German economic miracle world with a precise view. His films have been awarded several times with the Bundesfilmpreis (today: Deutscher Filmpreis) and made him an important representative of the German auteur film. "The city of Berlin is my trauma", said Tremper, who came from journalism and wrote star stories, effective reportages and autobiographical stories for the "Stern" and the "Zeit". His films are often escape stories set in both concrete and metaphorical transit spaces, as was his greatest success "Die endlose Nacht" (1963).
