Poignant document about Russia's war against Chechnia
I always imagined: When you get home, you'll bring the camp bed into the garden and sleep under the apple tree....
Under apples...
Now I'm scared.
When we get home, everything has changed:
the fashion, the music, even the streets.
Even the attitude towards war has changed.
WE WILL BE WHITE RAVENS ...
Valeri Morosov, 20 years, Mot shooter
No one returns as he left. If he comes back, he is a stranger. A white raven among the black ones.
The party is cheerful. The mothers say goodbye to their sons. Drinking and laughing on the train. Young faces: innocent and curious. Returning are tired, battered men. In between, only a few months of war. What happened to them? The society sent them out for its protection. They return with their experiences, scars and unhealed wounds. They have lost their innocence. The mothers no longer recognize their sons, the wives do not recognize their husbands. We are taken in these strangers.
Nine years of war in Chechnya. A dirty, senseless war. A war of the wounded Russian empire. A war in which many earn. A war that no one likes to talk about. The relationship with Russia is more important. People are glad that the war got a new label: Fight against terrorism. It sounds healthy and just.
