Luciano Ellena has loved mules for as long as he can remember. After years in the city of Cuneo, he returned to his home village of Chiusa di Pesio and bought his first mule – Katty. That was 20 years ago. Since then, he has dedicated his life to the dying profession of pack animal herding – “Säumen” means something like packing, packing a pack animal. Mules – a cross between a horse and a donkey – are particularly suitable for this. Strictly speaking, there are two different crosses: the mule – a cross between a donkey stallion and a horse mare – and the hinny – a cross between a horse stallion and a donkey mare.
