Hot-Air Balloon Adventure – Venezuela's Tepuis with Werner Herzog

Hot-air balloon pilots Phil and Almut “Allie” Dunnington are among the very best in their field worldwide. For their Venezuelan adventure to one of the world's most spectacular landscapes, they team up with legendary filmmaker Werner Herzog. They want to conquer the legendary table mountains towering over the Gran Sabana in the south of the country near Brazil. The remote ancient sandstone plateaus are known as ‘tepuis’ in the indigenous language. Rising up into the atmosphere like islands, often shrouded in clouds, they are surrounded by jungle and extremely difficult to access. Millions of years of isolation have resulted in the development of a great variety of endemic plants and animals on their high plateaus, not to be found anywhere else in the world. The waterfalls that cascade over the edges of the tepuis are among the highest in the world. Aiming to reach the tepuis by hot-air balloon is truly ambitious. No one has ever achieved it. Once again, this expedition shows that no two balloon journeys are the same. Propelled only by wind, anything can happen. This is particularly true when Allie and Phil dare to fly their balloon right up into the clouds.
