Seville, 1977. Miguel (Omar Banana) is the pride and joy of his widowed mother, Reme (Ana Wagener): as the first in the family, her talented son is set to attend university. But Miguel’s passion lies in music. A singing contest at a drag club could be the biggest opportunity of his life—if homosexuality weren’t still illegal in southern Spain in the 1970s, shortly after the end of the Franco era. Miguel immerses himself in the dazzling world of his crazy new friends and feels completely at home—until he is arrested during a police raid. Shaken to the core by this injustice, Reme takes the fight for her son’s freedom into her own hands—with perhaps the most colorful group of allies she could have imagined... Warm-hearted, colorful, filled with music, and featuring a wonderfully woven mother-son bond—“Love & Revolution” not only sensitively illuminates the early struggles of the Spanish LGBTQ movement. With plenty of wit and emotion, it also makes a powerful plea for freedom, self-determination, and community. Despite serious themes such as social exclusion, homophobia, and state repression, the film manages to maintain its positive, cheerful tone.
