“Don't expect a movie about climate change! Where we were, people forget how to spell the word climate.” The weather station ‘Khodovarikha’ is located near the Siberian Arctic Ocean, where the three meteorologists Vladimir, Sasha and Alexander observe the weather. They live and work there in complete isolation: only once a year does a polar ship bring long-awaited supplies. At first, their daily interactions seem peaceful, but the constant solitude gradually takes its toll and tensions grow between the meteorologists. Vladimir, in particular, brings unrest to the island. The more and more dark details about his past come to light, but blizzards and half-starved polar bears are also omnipresent dangers that the weathermakers face. Only the sporadic visits of a few nomads, Russian pop songs and, last but not least, Jack the guard dog, prevent them from succumbing to the madness that is always within reach. Probably the loneliest workplace in the world: award-winning cult director Stanislaw Mucha (“Kolyma”) visits three weathermakers on the polar island of “Chodowaricha”, where they measure the weather without any electronics, using only the simplest tools. Unimaginable, because their work also influences our weather forecasts. But how can the three whimsical meteorologists live and work in complete isolation? In his tragicomic documentary film “Weather Makers”, Mucha captures the idiosyncratic beauty of the Siberian tundra and its inhabitants in magnificent images.
