A subject that couldn't be more topical: Amal (Lubna Azabal), a young teacher at a Belgian school, stands out for her unconventional teaching methods. When she discusses the work of a Muslim author who writes openly about bisexual and homosexual lifestyles in her literature class, Amal causes a huge scandal in her class. Offended students, many of them from immigrant backgrounds, leave the classroom. Angry parents demand her dismissal. And when blatant threats endanger her safety, Amal's life becomes an absolute nightmare... And yet the dedicated teacher does everything she can to help one of her students, who is being severely threatened because of suspected homosexuality. As a socio-political drama, Jawad Rhalib's “Amal” (2023) intensively deals with the tensions in a multicultural European city where worldviews and preferences clash. In doing so, the film not only reflects real social debates about the prevention of extremism and cultural tensions. Rhalib addresses both external threats and the structural challenges within European school systems.
