The strategy of marmots is to eat fat and sleep through the cold season. However, this hibernation is not comparable to restful sleep at night: it is more of a life-threatening emergency situation. Researchers have discovered that if marmots do not wake up from hibernation occasionally and sleep “properly,” they die. The survival tactics of ibexes are also astonishing. Although they live in high mountains, they do not seem to like snow and avoid it wherever they can. On cold winter nights, their body temperature drops to save energy, reaching as low as 15 degrees in their legs. What would mean death by freezing for other animals is a skill that ensures the survival of the ibex. The film tells these and other amazing stories from winter nature with gripping images of magnificent nature and splendid landscape shots. Several film crews were on the ground, under the ice, and in the air. Among other things, a Cineflex system was used to capture particularly smooth shots from a helicopter. But even the harshest winter comes to an end eventually, and nature breathes a sigh of relief. This is most evident when you see chamois celebrating the arrival of spring with crazy leaps full of joie de vivre. The marmots have no time for such things. Their summer is often so short that the males mate with the females while they are still asleep. For them, spring and summer are nothing more than preparation time for the next struggle for survival in the Graubünden winter.
