Jeanne Vaubernier (Maïwenn) has it all: ambition, intelligence, and beauty, but she lacks one crucial thing, noble birth. Cleverly, this commoner uses her irresistible charm to escape her modest circumstances. She takes the wealthy Count du Barry as her lover, who in turn profits considerably from Jeanne's lucrative romantic affairs and arranges a meeting with the King through the influential Duke de Richelieu. The sumptuous encounter far exceeds all expectations: between Louis XV and Jeanne, not only does a passionate love at first sight ignite, but a deep affection also develops, one that will endure until death. With the seductive courtesan by his side, the King rediscovers his joy for life. The court of Versailles, however, is thrown into turmoil by this liaison, which defies all rules of propriety and etiquette. By casting Johnny Depp, who at the time was embroiled in a highly publicized court case against his ex-wife Amber Heard involving allegations of defamation and domestic violence, director Maïwenn took a bold risk. Frequently featured in headlines and the subject of public scrutiny, Depp's waxen appearance seems almost ideal for portraying a king already weary of life itself, while Maïwenn took on the role of Jeanne du Barry (1743–1793). Jeanne du Barry opened the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, where Maïwenn Le Besco had previously competed with her films All About Actresses and Polisse. This cinematic portrayal of the King's favourite also succeeds as an “opulent entertainment film that relies on a classic rise-and-fall narrative. Its tone initially fluctuates between subtle social criticism, particularly regarding the nobility's overt misogyny, and humorous satire when court rituals are mocked. The central love story between a courtesan and the King then takes on almost fairy-tale qualities, which are later tempered with a touch of melodrama. The direction revels in lavish imagery and draws strength from the compelling performances of its two leads.” (Lexicon of International Film)
