The Emperor of Paris

A lavishly staged epic about the legendary gang leader Vidocq with an outstanding cast. In Paris in 1811, Vidocq - the only man to escape twice from a high-security prison - is the talk of the town. Since he is presumed dead after his last spectacular escape, the ex-convict decides to go into hiding as a humble cloth merchant. But it's not easy to hide from the past: When former cellmates try to frame him for murder, Vidocq negotiates a deal with the police: In return for his pardon, he will now hunt down thieves and murderers on the streets of Paris. From convict to sheriff - an unprecedented success story, were it not for acquaintances from the underworld who want to punish the traitor from their own ranks and secure their rule over Paris. Loosely based on historical events, this adventure film is about the famous François Vidocq (1775-1857), who switched sides at the beginning of the 19th century and began hunting down criminals. Vidocq inspired authors such as Balzac and Poe and has been portrayed by George Sanders, Claude Brasseur and Gérard Depardieu. Especially in the action scenes, "L'Empereur de Paris" with Vincent Cassel in the title role develops a thrilling suspense, which is complemented by an outstanding cast (e.g. August Diehl) and impressive scenery.
