Banned Books Week

Banned Books Week, initiated by the American Library Association (ALA), draws attention each year to attempts at censorship in libraries and promotes freedom of reading. Against the backdrop of numerous book bans in U.S. schools and libraries, this collection brings together films about resistance to censorship, film adaptations of works on banned lists, controversial authors, and fictional narratives about power, exclusion, and the control of knowledge. The focus is on the Emmy Award-winning documentary *THE LIBRARIANS*, which portrays librarians who are committed to fighting the removal of books from public collections. LGBTQ+ issues, racism, and women’s rights are topics that are particularly frequently targeted by censorship attempts in parts of the U.S. Therefore, our collection also includes film compilations on these topics.
