Gitta Nickel (born 28.5.1936) is one of the few female directors who were successful in the GDR. Since the 1960s she has produced more than 60 films, some of which have won awards at festivals. She gained her first experience as an assistant director at DEFA, and from 1959 she was also involved in the production of feature films in this capacity. In 1963, she switched to the Studio für Wochenschau und Dokumentarfilm (Studio for Newsreel and Documentary Film) and in the following years shot more documentaries in the Soviet Union. From 1972 she was a member of the board, and from 1977 of the presidium of the Association of Film and Television Producers of the GDR.
