Jürgen Böttcher

Jürgen Böttcher (born 8.7.1931), director, painter: The documentarian Jürgen Böttcher alias painter Strawalde is one of the great artists of the GDR. Böttcher grew up in Strahwalde in Upper Lusatia and studied painting at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts from 1949 to 1953. From 1955 to 1960 he studied directing at the Academy of Film and Television in Potsdam and worked at the DEFA documentary film studio in Berlin until 1991. Since 1975 he has had exhibitions of his paintings and graphics in Erfurt, Berlin, Dresden and Karl-Marx-Stadt, among other places, and since 1990 in Paris, Brussels, Toronto, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne and Darmstadt. In 1994 he was awarded the title "Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres" by the French President François Mitterrand for his complete artistic oeuvre. In Germany, Böttcher received the Federal Cross of Merit in 2001. In 2006 he was honoured with a "Berlinale Camera" at the "Berlinale".
