Locarno Film Festival

Films from the special, international film festival on Lake Maggiore

The Locarno Film Festival was founded in 1946 and is one of the oldest film festivals in the world. While the international competition is fought for the "Leopards", Locarno has become particularly famous for its open-air ambience: every year, more than 8,000 visitors enjoy a special program on the Piazza Grande on a huge big screen - 26 by 14 meters. In addition to the competition and open-air program, there is a comprehensive retrospective as well as several other series and prizes. The festival in the sunny Swiss city on Lake Maggiore is primarily dedicated to international auteur films and focuses on continuity in the selection of social and political content. The 76th edition will take place from Aug. 2 to Aug. 12, 2023. The series "Histoire(s) du cinéma" is dedicated to the history of cinema and pays tribute to important filmmakers and artists. The classic "The Lodger" by Alfred Hitchcock opens this festival series this year and can also be streamed at filmfriend. Our collection presents films that have won awards or been screened at Locarno in previous years.
