Of Mothers and Fathers

A multifaceted look at contemporary motherhood and fatherhood

Once upon a time, everything seemed so simple: father and mother had clearly defined roles as a parental couple with clearly defined roles of woman and man. It was legally determined who was to be considered mother and who father, both were authoritarian and/or emotional role models for their children, to whom they passed on their own values, in varying degrees of weight. In religious-ethical terms, everything was said anyway with the Fourth Commandment: "You shall honour your father and your mother". But over the years and decades, modern societies changed and with them the role models of father and mother. Values that were once firmly established crumbled, authorities disappeared, and questions about the meaning and raison d'être of traditional roles of mothers and fathers became louder and louder. The films in our collection stimulate debate and invite open discourse.
