FINAL EPISODE (5/5) Over the last decade and a half, capital has been conquering the city. While a financial crisis emanating from New York has the world holding its breath in 2008, the opposite is happening in Berlin, to the surprise of many. The city is booming. Finally. To the delight of the governing party mayor Klaus Wowereit, who just a short time ago advertised Berlin as “poor but sexy,” Berlin is attracting not only tourists but also investors from all over the world, and will soon become a real estate El Dorado worth billions. After years of stagnation and decline, the city is suddenly growing at a rapid pace. Berliners and the club scene are feeling the downside of the boom: first, clubs are being pushed out by financially strong investors, then the residents. The fight of the citizens against skyrocketing rents, gentrification and for a city that continues to be worth living in is slowly becoming the overriding issue in the city. In 2014, to the great surprise of politicians, a citizens' initiative suddenly prevented the Senate's planned development of Tempelhofer Feld with a referendum. Meanwhile, the increasingly aloof Governing Mayor Klaus Wowereit no longer understands his citizens and makes a laughing stock of himself with a ruin of a building that was supposed to become a major airport. The story ends in the present, in 2024. As in 1990, a grand coalition of CDU and SPD is back in power, simply ignoring a referendum supported by over 60 percent of the citizens to socialize large housing companies and seeking to overturn another referendum, this time against the development of Tempelhofer Feld. In 2024, Berlin is facing a massive housing shortage, while millions and millions of square meters of newly built office space stand empty and construction ruins dot the city. It's like the early 90s all over again. History repeating?
