Yuuichi Aizawa returns for the first time in seven years to the nameless town where he always spent his vacations as a child. But a traumatic event from that time prevents him from remembering the past. Alongside his cousin Nayuki, he encounters several mysterious girls: Ayu, who has lost something important; Makoto, who doesn’t seem to like Yuuichi at first glance; Mai, who fights demons; and Shiori, who keeps appearing in the schoolyard despite her illness. As Yuuichi grows closer to the girls, he realizes that his lost memories are closely tied to their fates... The anime series “Kanon,” produced by Kyoto Animation and based on the visual novel of the same name by Key, is one of the early examples of the so-called drama-romance genre with supernatural elements. The story centers on high school student Yuuichi Aizawa, who, after many years, returns to the vacation town of his childhood and meets several girls, each of whom he is connected to by a mysterious past. The focus on the personal stories of the female characters gives “Kanon” a strongly episodic structure, with themes such as memory, loneliness, loss, and hope taking center stage in each major plot arc. This narrative style allows for an intense emotional engagement with the individual characters. Only later do the individual storylines come together to form a larger emotional whole. Particularly impressive is the atmospheric staging of the anime series: the wintry backdrop, the frequent use of snow and muted colors, and the calm composition of the frames create a melancholic, almost dreamlike mood in which the stories converge. In a town blanketed by snow, a place from his distant childhood, Yuichi reconnects with his cousin Nayuki. As she gives him a tour of his new home, he struggles with memories long faded.
