Québec, in the first half of the 19th century: Elisabeth d’Aulniere (Geneviève Bujold) marries the Lord of Kamouraska, Antoine Tassy (Philippe Léotard). But even the honeymoon destroys any feelings she had for him. Her alcoholic husband cheats on her and beats her. An attempt to flee is in vain; Elisabeth falls ill. Shortly thereafter, she falls in love with one of Antoine’s friends, the doctor George Nelson (Richard Jordan). The feelings are mutual, and when Elisabeth becomes pregnant, the two lovers decide to kill Antoine... “Kamouraska” is a successful film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Anne Hébert. At the time of its release (1973), the film was considered the most expensive Canadian film production to date—it was rewarded with four Canadian film awards. “A film reveling in beautiful imagery and grand emotions, which tells the story of an ‘amour fou’ in an aesthetically captivating way, with the atmosphere of a great family novel.” (Lexikon des Internationalen Films)
